Christmas Traditions: What's for Dinner? Around the World, Part 1

No matter the holiday, no matter where you call home around the globe, food plays an important part of celebrations. Conversation, laughter and memories shared over a meal bring people closer together than anything else.
That said, I was curious to know what people in other countries eat on Christmas Day. Maybe I'm getting tired of serving roast turkey and baked ham every year, I don't know. But I live in the States, and they say this country is the "melting pot" of the world, so let's take a look-see at some delicious holiday meals from around that world.

In Iceland, Jóladagur or Yule Day, is usually celebrated with extended family. The main Yule meal is 'Hangikjöt', a leg of roast lamb.

Sometimes 'Rjúpa' (Rock Ptarmigan a sea bird) is also eaten. Another Yule meal specialty is 'Laufabrauð' or leaf bread. This is made of thin sheets of dough cut into delicate patterns and fried. Each family often has their own patterns for the Laufabrauð. (Photo from menskitchenmagazine.tumblr.com)

In Brazil

Christmas comes at the height of summer's hot weather. Favourite Christmas foods in Brazil include pork, turkey, ham, salads, and fresh and dried fruits. Everything is served with rice cooked with raisins and a good spoon of "farofa" (seasoned manioc flour.) Popular Christmas desserts include tropical fruit and ice cream. (Photo from vinhoemprosa.com.br)

In Japan, Christmas Eve is often celebrated more than Christmas Day since it is not a national holiday, so schools and businesses are usually open. Fried chicken is often eaten on Christmas day. It is the busiest time of year for restaurants such as KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) and people can place orders at their local fast food restaurant in advance.
The traditional Japanese Christmas food is Christmas cake, which unlike the rich fruit cake is a sponge cake decorated with strawberries and whipped cream.

In Irelandtraditional Christmas food includes a round cake, full of caraway seeds. Often one is made for each person in the house. Nowadays, it's more common to have a Christmas Cake, a rich fruit cake covered with marzipan and decorated with icing. In addition to turkey for Christmas dinner, sometimes spiced beef is eaten. This can be served hot or cold. (Photo from guide-irlande.com)

So, crafty peeps, what's on your menu come Christmas Day? Really, we'd love to know, so leave a comment on what's cooking in your home during the holidays...

Challenge #19 Midway: Optional Theme--Christmas Blooms

Hello there folks! It is time to get on with the midway for Challenge #19. Just a note before I start: I still haven't had a chance to send out the papers or check for emails from the winners yet. I'm hoping to get to it this weekend. Thanks so much for your patience! I swear, one needs to be a saint, waiting for me! ;)

Right now, it is time to see what the Merry Maidens have been up to with their images from Robyn’s Fetish Digital Stamps, our guest sponsor for this month!

The team got to work with three lovely images this month. At the request of Robyn’s Fetish Digital Stamps, I have been asked to not display the watermarks of the images the team used. Instead, please click on the links below to view the images in the store.

While team members had the option of working with any of my Décosse's Dynamite Doodles papers, I did create a special set called Christmas Blooms. Check out the preview...

Everyone who links up a minimum of two cards during the month of July will earn ONE of the digital papers from this set. The specific paper up for grabs will be shown during the winner announcement post. Additionally, one random winner will earn the full set of papers.

Have your say in determining which paper will be offered to those who link up a minimum of two cards this month by completing the poll in the sidebar on the top right hand side.

Now check out what the Merry Maidens and my Co-coordinator Pat came up with to inspire you. Christina, one of our Sleigh Belles, didn't get a chance to post at the start so she is joining us today as well. Clicking on the names will take you to the individual blogs where you can check out the details for all these wonderful cards.

So if you haven't entered already, what are you waiting for? It is time to link up your Christmas and other holiday cards for July. Whether you choose to link up two Anything Goes themed cards simply to earn your free paper this month, or you choose to also follow the optional theme to have a chance at the sponsor's prize, it is completely up to you!

Here is a refresher of the details for this challenge...

Please remember that this is a CARDS ONLY link up. While we've had some lovely tag entries in the past, we've sadly had to disqualify them.

Challenge #19

Optional Theme:  Christmas Blooms

Flowers always seem to perk up a living space and Christmas flowers are no exception.  Christmas just doesn't feel like Christmas if there isn't a poinsettia, a wreath, some holly leaves and berries, or some pine boughs and pine cones scattered about.

In order to have a chance to win the prize from our wonderful guest sponsor this month, make sure that your card has a Christmas plant or flower somewhere in the designExamples include:  Holly and berries, laurels, poinsettias, Christmas cacti, wreaths, etc.  Whether you choose to feature the bloom as part of your image, within the papers or as part of your embellishments, it is completely up to you.  However you display the blooms, please keep in mind though, that they should feature prominently.  If you do follow the optional theme, be sure to add FT after your name so that we include you in the draw for the prize.

Remember, you don't need to follow the theme to link up your cards and earn a free paper each month, and have your name thrown into the year end draw for some extra digital goodies. You only need to follow the theme if you want a chance to win this month's sponsored prize of three images from Robyn’s Fetish Digital Stamps.

If you are new to this unique challenge, you can find out the impetus behind why I started it under the 'Introductions' tab.  As this is a unique kind of link up where we have both an anything goes Christmas option and an optional theme to follow, be sure to read all the details and rules you need to know in order to participate, by checking out the 'Challenge Details' tab (both tabs located at the top of the blog).

You can find the Challenge Details Summary along with the link up for Challenge #19 by clicking HERE.

Don't Forget, if everything goes according to plan...

  • Be sure to join us on July 23rd when Pat will be here to share a Christmas Tradition with you all.
  • Next up it will be time for our new challenge to start on August 1st.
  • Then, the winners from Challenge #18 will hopefully be posted on August 8th.
  • Other special posts may be published throughout the month.  Be sure to sign up to have our posts delivered by email or follow us through Bloglovin' so you don't miss a thing!

Challenge #17 Winner Announcement

Apologies to those of you waiting for this post.  It should have gone out yesterday but I'm really struggling to keep up at the moment.  Thankfully though, you just had to wait one extra day.

So, without further ado, how about we get on with announcing the winners and our top three Stocking Stuffers from Challenge #17.  Are you one of those lucky peeps?!  Let's find out!

Valerija, you are the winner of 2 digital stamps from The Stamping Boutique, our co-guest sponsor for May along with Glitterbabe Stamps, (chosen by Mini Web Tool), based on all eligible participants (i.e., those entrants who followed the optional theme).

http://thestampingboutique.com/http://thestampingboutique.com
Valerija, please send an email to the_12_moc_linkup {at} outlook {dot} com (or click HERE to bring the address up in your email program), with the subject, "12MoC Challenge #17 WINNER" to make arrangements to receive your prize.  Please note that it may take me several days to get back to you.  Thank you for your patience.  In the interim, please grab a copy of the winner badge below for your blog.

Next, it is time to get on with showcasing the top three.  With so many wonderful entries to choose from, it is always such a difficult task for the design team.  We did however settle on three awesome creations.  So, without further ado, here are our Stocking Stuffers for Challenge #17:

Congrats to our top three Stocking StuffersKaija, Hazel and Crafty Girl, please grab a copy of the badge below for your blog.

Everyone who links up two cards each month is eligible to receive a free digital paper.  All those who linked up two cards during the month of April were mailed their paper.  If you thought that you had linked two, but did not receive a free paper, please contact us and let us know and we'll look into it for you.

The nine individuals who linked up a minimum of two cards each during the month of MAY, qualifying them to receive the digital paper from that month, will receive the solid bokeh paper in the blueberry colour which garnered 60% of the votes.   I have included the watermark of it, below...

To all of you who linked up during May, thanks ever so much!  We are so happy to have all of you with us and hope that you'll continue to link up your holiday cards throughout the remainder of 2016!!!

Papers will be sent to the email address that qualifying participants used when they added their cards to the Link Up.  I hope to get them mailed by the 15th.  Your patience is appreciated.

As always, we are going to have a random draw from all the entries and give out a set of six digital papers to one lucky individual.  The papers are all made so why not have an extra prize! Now, as I made two different Bokeh sets for this particular challenge, the winner will have their choice between either the Multicolour set OR the Solid Colour set. Here are the watermarks for the full sets...

Challenge #19: Optional Theme--Christmas Blooms

Hello and welcome to The 12 Months of Christmas Link Up.  It is the first day of July and that means it is time for our next challenge to get started!  It is also a special day up here in Canada as July 1st marks the 149th birthday of the great nation that I call home.  Happy Birthday Canada and HAPPY CANADA DAY to all my fellow countrymen and countrywoman!!!

Before I continue, I did want to say a fond farewell to Monica.  Monica recently said goodbye to us as Co-Coordinator of this Link Up.  If you missed her goodbye post, you can find it HERE.  Monica has been part of my life in one capacity or another for a few years now and while she will be sadly missed here at The 12 Months of Christmas, I do understand that work comes before play.

Thankfully, someone will be stepping in to fill those Co-Coordinator shoes so that I don't lose my mind entirely.  Our very own Pat has stepped up to the plate and I'm super excited for this new partnership!

So,  please join me in wishing...
  • Monica, nothing but the best of luck with her job and other life adventures.  Hopefully we'll still see her from time to time linking up any Christmas cards she does happen to get the opportunity to create!
  • Pat, congratulations in her new role as Co-Coordinator for this Link Up!

Now it is time to get on with the new challenge...

The Basics

While you can find out ALL the information you need to know in order to participate in the challenge by checking out the 'Challenge Details' tab at the top of the page (or by clicking HERE), here is a refresher of the basics.
  • Anyone can link up as many Christmas and/or December holiday themed cards (including Happy New Year's cards) throughout the month with an ANYTHING GOES theme.
  • Every person who has linked up a MINIMUM of two (2) cards will be eligible to receive a specially designed Christmas themed digital paper.
  • Each month there will be an OPTIONAL theme to follow.  Anyone who submits a card adhering to the monthly theme, will have the chance to win a prize from that month's guest sponsor.
  • Every holiday card you submit to the link up, earns you one chance to win a special digital Christmas kit that will be offered up after the year is complete.
Now that the basics are out of the way, how about we get on with the details of Challenge #19.
